What Does the SRM University Study Hours Planner Calculate

This planner produces two results: study hours per subject and a target GPA per subject, both based on each subject's credit weight against your total weekly hours. A 4 credit subject receives more weekly hours than a 2 credit subject from the same pool of time.

What Inputs Does This Planner Need

Three entries, nothing else.

Credit value decides how much of your total hours each subject receives. Two subjects with equal effort but different credits never get an equal split, and that difference is the entire logic behind this planner.

How Are Study Hours Split Between High and Low Credit Subjects

Subjects with more credits receive a larger share of your total weekly hours, in direct proportion to their credit value. A student with 18 weekly hours across a 4 credit subject and a 2 credit subject splits that time 12 hours to 6 hours. The 4 credit subjects hold two thirds of the combined credits, so it holds two thirds of the time.

Here's the thing: this proportional split treats every subject's hour per credit ratio the same by default. Most students assume a heavier subject demands a different personal effort level than a lighter one. The data says otherwise. Under a proportional split, both subjects land on the same hours per credit ratio, 3 hours per credit in this example, which is exactly why the planner lets you adjust the split manually per subject instead of locking you into an even ratio.

How Is Target GPA Calculated for Each Subject

Target GPA for each subject comes from the hours per credit ratio you've allocated to it, mapped against standard academic workload guidelines. According to Stanford University's published credit hour policy, one unit of credit represents roughly three hours of student work per week. That figure sits at the center of this planner's estimate.

Below three hours per credit, target GPA drops toward the 6 to 7 range on SRM's 10 point scale. Around three hours per credit, target GPA sits closer to 7.5 to 8.5. Above three and a half hours per credit, target GPA moves into the 8.5 to 10 range.

Take a student who shifts their 18 weekly hours unevenly instead of splitting proportionally. Subject A, 4 credits, receives 14 hours, or 3.5 hours per credit, landing an estimated 8.5 to 10 target GPA. Subject B, 2 credits, receives 4 hours, or 2 hours per credit, landing an estimated 6 to 7.5 target GPA. Moving hours toward one subject moves its target GPA up and the other subject's target GPA down.

What Is a Realistic Weekly Study Split for SRM Students

A typical full week splits into two blocks.

  • Weekday study hours, Monday through Friday: 2 to 3 hours per day.
  • Weekend study hours, Saturday and Sunday: 4 to 5 hours per day.

Weekday hours stay lower because class time, labs, and travel already occupy a large part of the day. Weekend hours run higher since more uninterrupted time is available in one sitting.

How Do Exam Weeks Change This Plan

Exam weeks need roughly 50 percent more study hours than a regular week to cover revision and practice on top of normal coursework. A subject receiving 12 hours in a normal week moves to about 18 hours in an exam week, still split by the same credit proportion unless adjusted manually.

A student studying 18 hours weekly across two subjects during term time moves to around 27 hours during exam week, with each subject's share growing at the same rate it held before, unless that student chooses to weigh a weaker subject more heavily for the exam period specifically.
