SRM IST Grading Scale (2021 Regulation)
This grading scale applies uniformly across all SRM IST campuses, including Kattankulathur, Ramapuram, and Vadapalani.
All regulations use the same grading scale. The grade and mark ranges are identical; only the credit structure differs between regulations.

Ab (Absent) is the grade most students don’t know about. It’s given when you miss the end-of-semester exam without an approved medical leave. It gives 0 points, the same as a fail.
Ab and F both register as 0 points, but they appear differently on your internal transcript. An Ab can be appealed to the COE (Controller of Examinations) with medical documentation within the re-evaluation window.
What is GPA in SRM and why does it matter?
GPA stands for Grade Point Average. At SRM Institute of Science and Technology, it measures your academic execution for one semester on a 10-point scale.
Every subject has two things: a credit value and a grade point. Your GPA multiplies each subject’s grade, adds them all up and then divides by the total credits. That final number is your semester GPA.

Your GPA is not calculated as a simple average of your marks. Instead, each subject’s credit value determines its weight in your GPA calculation. For example, a 4-credit subject has four times the impact on your GPA compared to a 1-credit elective, even if you achieve the same grade in both.
This is a common point of confusion students are not aware until they receive their results.
According to the official academic regulations of SRM IST, B.Tech subjects under the 2021 regulation carry 1-5 credits per course. Important subjects like Mathematics, Engineering and Networks carry 4 credits each.
As a result, earning a low grade in a 4-credit subject will have a greater negative impact on your GPA than a low grade in a 1-credit subject.
How SRM IST Calculates Your Score (GPA Formula)
The GPA formula at SRM IST is a credit-weighted average:
GPA = Σ (Grade Points × Credits) ÷ Σ (Total Credits)
Σ just means “add all of these up.” Do it subject by subject, total both columns, then divide.
Here’s a real Semester 1 example for B.Tech CSE under the 2021 regulation, using actual subjects from the SRM IST curriculum.

GPA = 168 ÷ 19.5 = 8.61
The student scored O in both programming (4 credits) and physics lab (1.5 credits). Same grade, but programming added 40 points to the numerator while the lab only added 15.
What Happens to Your GPA When You Get an Arrear
An arrear means an F grade. Zero grade points. That zero goes into your semester GPA calculation immediately.
It stays in the GPA until you clear that subject in the supplementary exam. Once you pass, the F is replaced by your new grade, and your score improves from that semester forward.
Students are surprised at how much one F in a high-credit subject can drag a semester GPA down.

7 Simple Ways to Get a Better GPA at SRM
1: Study high credit subjects first.
A 4-credit subject like Mathematics or DSA can impact your GPA four times more than a 1-credit selection. If you have limited time, secure those first. One grade up in a 4-credit paper strikes two grades up in two small subjects.
2: Don’t ignore your cycle tests.
Your internal marks are 40 out of 100. That’s nearly half your grade. Score excellent in assignments and cycle tests. Now the end semester becomes much less stressful for you. You will need lower marks to hit A.
3: Keep attendance above 75%.
Go below 75% in any subject and you can’t sit the end-sem exam. That’s an automatic Ab (zero grade points), same as a fail. This is the easiest GPA mistake to avoid and the one students regret the most. Not sure where you stand? Check your attendance percentage with our Attendance Calculator.
4: Take lab exams seriously.
Lab viva queries at SRM repeat across batches. Circuits, programming, and physics lab questions follow the same pattern year after year. Equip your observation record, know your experiment and you score O every time. It’s 1.5-2 credits that most students underexploit.
5: Solve COE past papers before end-sem.
SRM’s COE (controller of examinations) releases past year papers on the official portal. Most divisions chase the same unit-wise question pattern for 3 to 5 years straight. Solving the last three or four years of papers tells you exactly what gets asked, how many marks it carries, and how to structure your answers.
6: Check result on the day it comes out.
SRM’s re-evaluation window is exactly 15 days from the date results are published. After that, the COE closes it with no exceptions. If your grade doesn’t match what you scored internally, apply through the SRM ERP system the same day. Day 16 is too late.
7: Semesters 3 and 4 decide your placement GPA.
Placement drives at SRM IST open in Semester 5 or 6. The GPA on your placement profile at that point covers Semesters 1 through 4. By Semester 5, earlier data is already locked. If you want a strong placement GPA, Semesters 3 and 4 are your window (not after the portal opens).
