SRM IST Grading Scale (2021 Regulation)

This grading scale applies uniformly across all SRM IST campuses, including Kattankulathur, Ramapuram, and Vadapalani.

The scale comes from clause R 8.1 of the SRM IST 2021 academic regulations. To pass a course you need at least 50% of the combined internal and end semester marks after normalisation, which is the bottom of grade C.

Three grades carry zero points. F means you scored below 50% in the course. Ab means you were absent for the end semester exam. I stands for Incomplete and is given when your attendance in a course is below the 75% minimum, which means you cannot sit that exam. All three count as zero in the GPA, so choose F in the calculator to see their effect.

A course with F, Ab or I stays on your record until you pass it later. If you think a theory grade is wrong you can apply to the Controller of Examinations for a review of the answer script.

What is GPA in SRM and why does it matter?

GPA stands for Grade Point Average. At SRM Institute of Science and Technology it shows how you performed in one semester on a 10 point scale. The regulations call it SGPA.

Every course carries a credit value and you earn a grade point in it. Your GPA is the sum of grade points multiplied by credits, divided by the total credits of that semester.

Your GPA is not a simple average of marks. The credit value of each course decides how much it counts. A 4 credit course has four times the effect of a 1 credit course even when you score the same grade in both. Many students only notice this when the results come out.

Credits come from weekly contact hours. Under the 2021 regulations one lecture hour gives 1 credit, one tutorial hour gives 1 credit and one practical hour gives 0.5 credit. A B.Tech degree needs 160 credits in total. The details are in the official academic regulations of SRM IST.

How SRM IST Calculates Your Score (GPA Formula)

SRM IST uses a credit weighted average. Clause R 8.6 of the regulations gives the formula.

GPA = Σ (Grade Points × Credits) ÷ Σ (Credits)

Σ means add up. Work course by course, total both columns and then divide. Courses with an F stay in the sum with zero points and the final result is rounded to two decimal places.

The table below shows an example for a first semester CSE student. The subjects and credits are only a sample and the calculator above loads the exact list for your branch.

GPA = 168 ÷ 19.5 = 8.62

The student scored O in both the 4 credit programming course and the 1.5 credit physics lab. The grade is the same but programming added 40 points to the total while the lab added 15. The exact value is 8.615, which rounds to 8.62.

GPA, SGPA and CGPA: What Is the Difference?

At SRM, GPA and SGPA mean the same thing and both describe one semester. CGPA covers every semester you have completed and is weighted by the credits of each semester, so a semester with more credits moves it further.

CGPA = Σ (Semester Credits × SGPA) ÷ Σ (Semester Credits)

What Happens to Your GPA When You Get an Arrear

An arrear is a course in which you got F, Ab or I. Each one adds zero grade points to that semester while its credits still count in the total, so the GPA drops straight away. A 4 credit F costs far more than a 1 credit F.

The grade stays on your record until you pass the course later. Once you do, the new grade replaces it, the month and year of passing appear on the grade card and your CGPA is revised. 7 Simple Ways to Get a Better GPA at SRM

1: Give high credit courses your first hours

A 4 credit course counts four times as much as a 1 credit course. When time is short, protect the heavy courses first. One grade up in a 4 credit course adds the same quality points as one grade up in four 1 credit courses.

2: Take cycle tests seriously

In a standard theory course the continuous assessments carry 60% of the total and the end semester exam carries 40%. Unit tests, assignments and other internal work therefore decide most of your grade before the exam starts. Doing well early lowers the marks you need at the end. 3: Stay above 75% attendance

The 75% rule applies to each course separately. Fall below it in a course and you cannot write that end semester exam. You receive an I grade, which counts as zero points. Absence for approved reasons such as illness or being on duty is excluded up to a limit of 25%. In rare cases a committee can recommend condonation but it cannot exceed 10%. 4: Do not neglect the lab

Lab courses are assessed differently. Two cycles of experiments carry 30% each and the practical exam carries 40%, with no written end semester paper. Keep your record complete, know every experiment and prepare for the viva so that these credits turn into a strong grade.

5: Practise with past question papers

Collect earlier end semester papers from your department or seniors and solve them against the clock. The regulations say these exams test knowledge, application and analysis, and evaluation or creative ability, so practise all three kinds of question and not only definitions. Old papers also show how marks are spread across units.

6: Check your result as soon as it is out

If a theory grade looks wrong you can ask the Controller of Examinations to review your end semester answer script. The review covers only the descriptive part of theory courses and you must apply with the prescribed fee inside the time announced with the results. Read the results notice on the day it is published so you do not miss that date.

7: Know the CGPA lines that matter

The regulations set clear CGPA lines. A Minor needs a CGPA of at least 7.0 up to semester 5 with no standing arrears. The Honours degree needs 8.5 or above with no history of arrears and starts from semester 4. A CGPA of 8.0 or above with no Ab, F or I in any semester, finished within 8 semesters, earns First Class with Distinction.
